DOC O'LENA
1967 Bay Stallion
|
Sire: Doc Bar Dam: Poco Lena
Doc O'Lena's life started near the end of his dam's famous life. On June 32, 1967 Doc O'Lena was foaled
on the front lawn of Double J Ranch in Paincines, California. He had to learn to nurse while his mother lay on the front lawn, as Poco Lena tended to due because of her sore feet.
Doc O'Lena's intelligence and nice disposition was obvious even at that young of an age.
Charley Ward started Doc O'Lena under saddle the spring of his two year old year. The colt was very trainable
The trainer had just started into cutting training and felt the colt had definite promise. After about 30 days riding Doc O'Lena was started on cattle. He proved to be smart and cowy.
The Jensen's, at this time decided it was time to sell Doc O'Lena. Doc O'Lena sold for $15,000 to Adrian Berryhill and Shorty Freeman as co-owners. Berryhill paid the full amount and Shorty was to due the training.
Shorty Freeman trained Doc O'lena for the following 6 months for the NCHA Futurity, but due to Shorty being on the road so much he claimed that Doc O'lena trained himself. At the 1970 NCHA Futurity Doc O'lena
and Shorty Freeman made History and set a record that has stood for more than 30 Years. They won all 4 go rounds. The money Shorty won in the Futurity enable to pay off his debt to Adrian Berryhill. He now owned his half share of Doc O'lena Free and clear.
After a few more years Shorty decided to stop showing Doc O'Lena for he did not want to risk the injury to the horse so bad that he could not breed.
As soon as Doc O'Lena entered into the stud arena he was booked full. They tried increasing the stud fee to discourage people and his book still remained full.
Doc O'Lena's offspring have won more than $14 million in cutting completion, including 3 NCHA Futurity Championships: Lenaette - 1975, Smart Little Lena - 1982 and CD O'Lena - 1994. During Doc O'Lena's lifetime he sired 1311 Quarter Horses, 6 Appaloosas and 12 Paints.
He sired champions in almost every major cutting events held, plus major titles in reining, working cowhorse and roping competitions. There are so many outstanding sons and daughters of Doc O'Lena that the list would be very long.
In 1993, Doc O'Lena at the age of 26 he passed away. In 1997 he was inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame.
